I Know It’s Over – The Smiths
The third track from ‘The Queen is Dead’ – my favourite album by The Smiths – shows off the true song-writing ability of Morrissey. I truly believe if it wasn’t for his antics in later life, Morrissey would be considered one of the all time greats!
I’m sure all fans of music have heard the bluesy ballad at this point and have, for some reason, fallen madly in love with the gloomy tones. A simple, elegant drum beat complimented immaculately by Johnny Marr, the song has the ability to put a tear in the eye of the coldest soul.
Lyrically, the song is perfect. Morrissey’s middle verse in which he picks out his own perceived flaws and mocks them, almost taunting himself is haunting. The self awareness is something we all understand. “If you’re so funny, then why are you on your own tonight?”
I adore this song, from start to finish you are gripped. As the song comes to an end Morrissey almost sings in pain the opening lyric: “oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head.”
You can listen below but prepare to have your heart strings pulled on, and prepare to repeat the song over and over.
