Words: Dan Smith
Quite a bold statement for a Monday I know, however, I’m conifdent that just one listen of Fat Larrys Band ‘Zoom’ will have you convinced!
As the title suggests, it is in-fact Fat Larrys, otherwise known as Larry James’ birthday. So what better time to look back at the soul disco, funk cult classic that is ‘Zoom’. Released in 1982, the song reached #2 in the UK charts as well as #10 in the Australian charts, as well as being featured in the 1982 Christmas special of Only Fools and Horses.
Lyrically simplistic, yet genius to its core and incredibly addictive to listen too, ‘Zoom’ tells the most old-fashioned love story there is… love at first sight. “Zoom, just one look and then my heart went boom” is the opening lyric to the love ballad. What I really love about the lyrics of ‘Zoom’ is that not most of it makes sense. “Smack, just one kiss and I was out of whack” and I think this sums up love perfectly. Because love doesn’t make sense and you can’t put it into words, which is exactly what Fat Larry portrays by saying the first thing that comes to his mind.
Ultimately, this is one of the greatest love songs out there and I could waffle on all day about how much I adore this track – it is actually going to be my first dance song at my wedding – but I’m just going to post the link below and let you enjoy the music!
